Hon. Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan (Dhanak), born on April 12, 1949, in Durban, South Africa, was a distinguished anti-apartheid activist and a central figure in South Africa's democratic transition. The son of Rambhaben and Jamnadas Gordhan Dhanak, his roots trace back to Sathapar, Gujarat, India, and he was a member of the Parajiya Pattni Soni family. Alongside his elder brother, Maneklal. He pursued a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Durban-Westville (UDW), graduating in 1973, and completed his internship at King Edward VIII Hospital (now Victoria Mxenge Hospital). Pravin Gordhan’s lifelong commitment to justice and equality saw him endure significant hardships, including imprisonment, during the anti-apartheid struggle. He served in various significant governmental roles, notably as Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, Finance Minister, and Minister of Public Enterprises. His contributions were acknowledged with the Padma Bhushan award in 2019 by the Government of India. Pravin Gordhan passed away on September 13, 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa, after a battle with cancer at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife, Vanitha Raju, and his daughters, Anisha and Priyesha.
