Environment: Mauritius solicits US assistance The expertise and know-how of the United States of America (USA) to assist Mauritius in tackling environment matters, was solicited today, by the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Anand Bhagwan. The Minister held talks with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Mauritius, Mr Henry Jardine, during a courtesy call held in Ebene. The Junior Minister of the Ministry of Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mrs Joanna Marie Bérenger, was also present. Minister Bhagwan qualified his meeting with the US Ambassador as a cordial and fruitful one. He said that both parties evoked the existing collaboration between the two countries, and spoke of furthering this partnership in other avenues of collaboration. The Minister stated that he made a request to the Ambassador for the possibility of US experts providing training to the Ministry’s personnel with regard to disaster risk management and oil spill. American expertise was also sought in matters relating to recycling and solid waste management as well as to support the Beach Authority to manage public beaches and safe swimming sites. Another area where the American know-how was requested pertains to tackling erosion across the coastal regions of Mauritius, said Minister Bhagwan.
